Giuseppe Verdi's 'Aida' is an intense drama with the great classical theme of a love triangle. Set in Ancient Egypt, and written in 1870 to celebrate the inauguration of the Suez Canal, in this masterpiece Aida, Amneris and Radames bring passion, love and hate to their ultimate consequences. This opera with great symphonic scenes features magnificent arias that cover the extensive score; it's been performed in the Liceu multiple times over the decades.
This time the cast is led by two spectacular voices playing the role of Aida: Angela Meade, one of the queens of the MET who makes her Liceu debut; and Jennifer Rowley, also performing for the first time at the Liceu. They're accompanied by Yonghoon Lee and Luciano Ganci. Gustavo Gimeno is the musical director, and the award-winning and Thomas Guthrie is the stage director.
