The building of the Pavelló de la República is an identical replica (made by the ESPINET/UBACH ARQUITECTES for the Olympic Games in 1992) of the building the Spanish Republic commissioned, which was designed by architects Josep Lluís Sert and Luis Lacasa, to represent the Spanish Civil War at the World Exposition in Paris in 1937. Built, both then and now, with limited materials according to the circumstances of that difficult time, it was a major architectural landmark and had important relations with avant-garde artists of the time. In its open courtyard, Picasso exhibited his famous ‘Guernica’ (today there's a reproduction), and there are also works by other artists like Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Alberto Sánchez and Juli González.
