Axel Hotel
Axel Hotel
A design hotel that’s popular with cosmopolitan, image-conscious party people. The Axel’s main clientele is the gay crowd but it’s also hetero-friendly. And not only is the hotel a fun place to hang out, thanks to the rooftop pool, hot tub and chill-out area, a large spa, and Peruvian-Japanese fusion restaurant, many of Barcelona’s key sights are just a short walk away. This seductive hotel brings together style, design and a range of inviting services. Based in a 19th-century building typical to the local area, the Axel Group has created a four-star accommodation that while principally aimed at gay travellers is also completely hetero-friendly. A lot of effort has gone into creating a hotel that will provide guests with a memorable stay. Rooms are comfortable (eg, a choice of four different kinds of pillows is available) and elegant in calming neutral tones. King-size beds come as standard, as does erotic artwork. Some of the superior rooms offer views of the city or galleries with stained-glass windows, while the four suites on the upper floors have private terraces and extra technological features. An extensive spa is located on the lower ground floor, offering massages, fitness machines, a thermal circuit and personal trainers in a gorgeously designed space. At the top of the building you’ll find the Sky Bar, pool and open-air Jacuzzi; relax during the day by the water, and at night chill out with cocktails. For lunch and supper, head to the hotel’s restaurant Nikkei 103

It may not be the prettiest hotel in the city but its location is ideal when it comes to transportation both around the city and to/from other places, it has a great rooftop pool and bar, and shopaholics are well-placed to indulge their passion. Part of the Spanish Expo Hotel chain, this four-star hotel seems to describe itself mainly as ‘functional’. We’re not going to argue with that but there are still many more enticing pluses to staying there. The building is an anonymous tower block and its immediate surrounds (which include Barcelona’s main train station, Sants-Estació) are not overly appealing. However, the Expo Hotel is just one metro stop away from the centre of town, and if you’re catching a train or plane onwards, you could hardly be better located. What’s more, in the warmer months the rooftop pool and Terraza Urban BCN bar provide a great place to relax along with fabulous city views, including of the nearby Montjuïc ‘mountain’ and its emblematic buildings. Rooms are comfortable and the décor throughout is simple and modern; a bonus is that every one of the 423 bedrooms has a balcony. In essence, this is a place to sleep and take a break after a busy day doing stuff elsewhere, whether that’s business meetings or seeing the sights. And if shopping is high on your Barcelona to-do list, the Expo Hotel is an excellent base. You have three shopping centres within easy access, including the converted Las Arenas bullring, which you can get to on foot in less than 10

A contemporary take on the traditional hostel, Generator offers a range of rooms for all tastes and budgets, from shared dormitories to a private penthouse suite with city views. It’s a place for making new friends and a fantastic base for exploring the city centre and more off-piste areas such as Gràcia. Not that it were needed, but this venue is certainly proof that we are all travellers now and that the range of accommodations on offer to us keeps growing. Generator take the concept of a low-price place to lay your head and add on enticing extras to bring their various hostels up to the expectations of today’s tourist. With a largely but not exclusively millennial focus, Generator Barcelona recognises that there are many profiles when it comes to guests. So you can find small, large and women-only dormitories, triple and quad rooms, and, at the top end of the scale, private rooms with terraces and even a penthouse suite that can sleep up to six, an ideal space for families. The bedrooms tend towards a clean, contemporary aesthetic while the common areas such as the Fiestas de Gràcia bar (named for the exuberant August festival held in the local Gràcia neighbourhood) are more colourful with an innovative combination of industrial and rustic features. It works as both a practical base for exploring the city and a place to hang out with friends old and new, especially during the daily evening happy hour, thereby carrying on the best traditions of global hostels.   Location
