Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) moves from the East Coast of the United States to Los Angeles ready to make new friends. Instead he becomes a target for the Cobras, a hostile group of bullies who study karate, when he starts going out with Ali (Elisabeth Shue), the ex-girlfriend of the Cobras' leader (William Zabka). Daniel finds he has no other option but to ask for help from Mr Miyagi (Noriyuki 'Pat' Morita), a martial arts teacher. While studying with Miyagi, Daniel develops not only his physical aptitude but also the confidence in himself he needs to overcome all the obstacles in his way. (Time Out revew)
