Restless photojournalist Jeff Jeffries (James Stewart) is housebound with a broken leg. He finds a way to escape boredom by observing the comings and goings of his neighbours from his rear window with the help of some binoculars and his super zoom lens. His lady friend (Grace Kelly) and his nurse (Thelma Ritter) get involved when, after a series of strange circumstances, Jeffries starts to suspect a neighbour (Raymond Burr) of foul play when the neighbour's wife goes missing.
