This is the first of five adaptations that Terence Fisher made of the Frankenstein legend in the era when Hammer Films were bringing back the horror genre based on legends re-created by Universal in the 1930s. The director's combination of the morbid and sinister is masterful, and at the same time he was able to create an atmosphere of great beauty.
