Tribute is paid to the recently passed Prince with the screening of his big-screen debut in this musical drama that shares its name with his celebrated sixth album. In the film, the Minneapolis singer and composer takes on the semi-autobiographical role of The Kid, a poor musician haunted by family problems who replicates the way his father abuses his mother in his own relationship. Fighting to survive his turbulent family and his own rage, the Kid's musical talent becomes a refuge, as does his relationship with the singer Apollonia. Tensions rise when his rival tries to win his girlfriend and get exclusive rights to the bar where the two sing.
