Brooklyn, summer of 1987. Several people who frequent the smoke shop run by Auggie Wren (Harvey Keitel) confide their problems in him. The curious story of how he got his camera and why he decided to produce his unusual collection of photographs finally gives Paul Benjamin (William Hurt), a renowned writer going throgh a crisis, the plot he has been searching for. In the meantime, Paul helps Rashid (Harold Perrineaud Jr.), a confused African-American teenager who is looking for his father (Forest Whitaker).
