The work of Basque artist Asier Mendizábal pays attention to the relationships between form, discourse and ideology, and speaks to the relationship of constructivist sculpture with its roots in the abstract utopia of the early decades of the 20th century. The question of markers and of their relative importance in identification as a social and political emblem also have their place among the artist's interest. Mendizábal's works can't be interpreted at first sight, but rather they gather layers of significance and sometimes refer to multiple ideas that aren't of general knowledge. While in some pieces you can read a direct connotation to the history and recent reality of the Basque Country, in others the choice may belong to historical or ideological legacies.
