There’s always a flurry of activity in Suvarnabhumi Airport—it is probably one of the busiest travel hubs in Southeast Asia. But you’d be surprised to find out that there is as much going on in the neighborhood surrounding Suvarnabhumi as there is within it.

Located southeast of Bangkok, the area of Suvarnabhumi is especially bustling during the weekend, and is popular among Bangkokians who want to get away from the city and explore attractions you wouldn’t necessarily find in the capital, such as outlet malls, golf courses, and even waterparks.

The same attractions can also be tempting to travelers, especially those on a lengthy layover or whose flights have been delayed. You have the option to wait around listlessly at the airport or you can leave your bags at luggage storage, hop in a taxi, and explore these destinations within easy reach of Suvarnabhumi.

Rummage through discounted stocks at huge outlet malls

What do people usually do before taking a flight back home? Go on one last shopping spree! And the outlet malls in the neighborhood are the best places to do just that.

Siam Premium Outlets is a mecca for great finds from well-known brands such as Calvin Klein, Adidas, Coach, Longchamp (and the list goes on) with prices that have been marked down as much as 70 percent. Bargain hunters in search of something more precious or luxurious should make a beeline for Central Village, which has the likes of jewelry stores Swarovski and Pandora, and silk house Jim Thompson.

Test out your golf swing

If you have several hours to kill, why not try something more physical like swinging a club at one of Bangkok’s leading golf courses? Summit Windmill Golf Club in Le Méridien Suvarnabhumi is heaven for keen golfers, with its man-made lakes, rolling hills, and beautifully landscaped terrain. Come at night to see the course all lit up—it’s quite a magical experience.

If time doesn’t allow you to play a round of golf on an actual course, then you may want to pop into Topgolf Megacity instead. The sports and entertainment complex allows you to play virtual golf games in a hitting bay. It also provides several dining and wining options to make the most of your flight-waiting time.

Burn some calories cycling around Suvarnabhumi Airport

Little do people know (even locals) that there’s a lengthy cycle track around Suvarnabhumi Airport. The Happy and Healthy Bike Lane (HHBL) lets serious cyclists pedal away on a 23.5- kilometer stretch, with designated lanes for fast and normal speed. You can also jog on a separate 1.5-kilometer track alongside more casual bikers.

The facilities are well-designated and entry is free, but you need to follow regulations to assure everyone’s safety. You can also rent a bike, and grab some quick grub from the food court or one of the coffee shops. It’s a pretty convenient way to get a quick workout in before sitting through a long flight.

The entire family can enjoy thrills and spills at this waterpark on the rooftop of Central Bangna. Pororo Aquapark Bangkok is brimming with amazing attractions and rides that are perfect for kids and adults, including double splash pool Tong Tong’s Magic Slide and the 158-meter tube Pororo’s Funnel.

If you’re not a fan of overpriced airport food, then make a pitstop at lifestyle destination Mega Bangna, where you can fill up on more reasonably and—likely—more delicious fare. There are over 50 restaurants here, including famous conveyor belt sushi restaurant Sushiro. And since this is a mall, there are plenty of other ways to kill time, such as going to the cinema, pottering around in IKEA, and, of course, shopping.

Combine fun, comfort, and convenience at a nearby hotel

Hotels around an airport aren’t just places to spend a long layover that lasts through the night. They can also be great options if you want to explore the surrounding neighborhood but also be assured that you have a significantly lesser chance of missing your flight.

Within close vicinity of Suvarnabhumi airport, you have Le Méridien Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok Golf Resort & Spa. Apart from being home to a pristine, 160-acre, 18-hole course, this chic hotel is also a haven for guests who want a taste of local culture in a world-class setting. Thoughtfully-designed guest rooms with ultra-comfortable beds, state-of-the-art meeting facilities, a variety of dining options, including chic restaurant Favola for authentic Italian staples like pasta and pizza, and a stunning Thai-inspired spa that boasts the wellness signature of Le Méridien all allow you to savor the good life.

Another great choice is the new Courtyard Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. This Marriott hotel is equipped with everything you need for a comfortable yet productive stay, from a room type that fits your needs, to restaurants that offer a taste of both local and international cuisine at the likes of American grill house Big Bite Burger, to flexible spaces where you can work or chill. It also has a spa that’s perfect for escaping all airport- and travel-related stress, as well as a fitness center where you can re-energize
