Reconnect With Your City: Find out where to unwind in the bustling neighborhood of Silom

Wind down after a fast-paced day at these hidden gems in this notoriously busy area.

Let us set the scene on how crazy Silom can get in one day. Like its sister neighborhood Sathorn, Silom is one of Bangkok’s major CBDs and home to huge establishments and institutions such as national banks, long-established schools, and international corporations. The start of the day sees a flurry of students, nine-to-fivers, and service crew flocking to their schools and workplaces. At noon, office workers come out to hunt for a quick lunch, either from the street food carts or mom-and-pop shops that line the neighborhood’s main road. More chaos manifests in the late afternoon as everyone tries to get home or let loose—or go wild—at one of the many bustling restaurants, bars, and clubs that make Silom one of the Thai capital’s most vibrant areas. It’s easy to just pop in and dine, drink, and dance ’til you drop or until the wee hours, whichever comes first.

Silom is also easily accessed via BTS Saladaeng and MRT Silom, which makes it even more welcoming and attractive to both curious tourists and local revelers from all over the city.

The neighborhood may be notorious for its endless bustle and jam-packed establishments, but there is another side to Silom. One where you can steer clear of the crowds and frantic rush, and kick back at your own pace. Let us guide you through a day at Silom’s more quiet spots.

RECOMMEND: Rediscover your love for music and entertainment at these 7 hotspots, or ‘Reconnect With Your City’ to see where else you should go in the Thai capital.

Sit down and enjoy your morning coffee at these friendly venues

Don’t let rush hour prevent you from savoring a good cup of freshly brewed coffee. The top player in the neighborhood is Eureka on Soi Saladaeng 1, the first in Silom to serve nitro cold brew on tap. The coffee shop is also known for its creative tea and coffee blends like salted egg coffee and durian-infused tea. You can also visit Everyday by Karmakamet near Exit 3 of BTS Saladaeng. Here, you can grab a cuppa in between browsing through the wellness brand’s stylish clothes, aromatic candles, and cute homeware. If you fancy a fuller morning meal, pop into The Commons Saladaeng where you can order from a selection of stalls and shops. We recommend the veggie smoothies from PAAK and the pancake sandwiches from Crackhouse.

Explore ancient royal Thai cuisine at these institutional restaurants

Spare some time for a proper lunch at Silom’s revered Thai eateries. Kalpapruek on Phramuan Road is a household name for elegant Thai fare. First opened in 1976, the restaurant welcomes long-time regulars craving traditional dishes like Thai-style beef stew and green curry, as well as young ’uns who come for its photogenic cakes and pastries. Thanying, which has been serving refined royal Thai dishes for nearly three decades, is another Silom favorite. Try the khanom jeen (rice noodles with smooth curry) and the spicy salad with lotus petals.

If you come during the summer months, say April or May, then you should definitely try these establishments’ khao chae or the famous traditional Thai snack platter that includes rice in jasmine water.

Satisfy your curiosity and delve into the history of Bangkok’s red light district

Since you’re already in the hood, why not brave Bangkok’s Red Light District and learn something along the way. Introducing Patpong, the famous (or should we say infamous) nightlife destination in Silom that’s home to neon-lit clubs and dimly lit hole-in-the-wall venues like The Stranger Bar.

You wouldn’t expect it, but there is actually a museum among these nocturnal haunts. Patpong Museum pays homage to the long, glorious history of its locale. Take a walk through different rooms that reveal how Patpong was nothing but an agricultural field back in the 1940s and then developed into an entertainment and leisure center when American companies and investors came to Bangkok. There’s so much intriguing stuff to see, from a celebrity hall of fame that reveals which international stars have visited the area to a virtual reality show that reimagines Patpong’s “naughty” side.

Spend the evening savoring an elegant multi-course meal

End your leisurely day in Silom with a proper sit-down at a fine-dining restaurant. Some of Thailand’s (possibly the world’s) most talented chefs have set up base in the area’s small alleys and offer epicurean experiences that hinge on first-rate ingredients, as well as flavorful twists and turns.

Relish contemporary Thai dishes at Le Du, a one-Michelin-starred dining room that was also voted Thailand’s fourth-best and the world’s 72nd best restaurant. Le Du is helmed by Chef Ton Tassanakajohn, who’s known for using innovative techniques to bring a new spin to local ingredients. Paii, located at neo-classical mansion The House on Sathorn, is a great choice for couples who want to indulge in classic Thai seafood fare in a romantic setting.

Get cozy and comfortable at these urban sanctuaries

Before snagging a flight to Bangkok, make sure you’ve booked a hotel that offers nothing less than an amazing stay. Consider W Bangkok if you’re looking to stay in the Silom area. Accessible from both BTS Saint Louis and BTS Chong Nonsi, this buzzy and vibrant hotel has everything you need to live it up—but also settle in comfortably—in Bangkok’s busiest neighborhood, from spacious rooms to one of the most amazing spas in the Thai capital. But if you really want to chill out, then take an afternoon off and just laze by the hotel’s rooftop swimming pool, which locals would tell you is one of the most photogenic pools in town. Bask in the sun while sipping a bubbly or come during dusk to see how the pool is all lit up in LED lights once the sun has set.

If you want something a bit more timeless, then Le Méridien Bangkok won’t let you down. This well-known hotel on Surawong Road recently completed renovations, and it now boasts new room interiors inspired by Thai poetry and a wellness center with mineral-infused Japanese-style hot baths. Its Western restaurant  Rolling Ribs Brew Bar & BBQ is also a great place for comfort food like burgers and perfectly grilled meats.
