There are quite a handful of neighborhoods in Bangkok that you can really call 'cool.' We’re talking about a place where you can wake up to views of the rising sun above the beautiful river, where an artsy café or hip gallery is just a short walk away, where you can fill up on cheap local eats or dine in a swanky restaurant, and where you can easily commute around town via the Skytrain or boat. For a busy and spread-out city like Bangkok, it sounds too good to be true—but not if you live in Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San.

This neighborhood on the west bank of the Chao Phraya is one of the most desirable places to live right now, thanks to its accessibility via waterways and above-the-ground trains, a number of diverse eating spots and hipster cafés, its proximity to massive lifestyle spot ICONSIAM, as well as many hotels and condos mushrooming around the area. Plus, there are lots of awesome things to do that only people who actually live here get to experience (fodder for bragging rights to make their friends jealous). We explored Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San and these are the activities we enjoyed doing the most in this up-and-coming neighborhood.

RECOMMENDED: Best things to do in Bangkok right now

Rising early for a jog along the river

Waking up at the break of dawn and having a run along the Chao Phraya River is a dream for most Bangkok residents. But not for those living in Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San. This riverside neighborhood is home to many piers, which connect to pedestrian paths that you can jog on while taking in stunning water views.

You can also sprint your way to a filling breakfast or to get fresh ingredients at the many morning markets in Khlong San or at Tha Din Daeng Market.

Having breakfast at a hip cafés

Café-hopping is really a big thing for Bangkokians, but most of the hot spots in the city are crammed with young ‘uns and pseudo-influencers snapping away with their camera phones on the weekend. The good thing about living in Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San is that it allows you to pop into crowd-pleasing cafés and not have to deal with an elbow-to-elbow experience.

Walden Home Cafe, for one, is a beloved haven for caffeine lovers who are also bookworms. Library Cafe at The Jam Factory is a great quiet spot for a cuppa and Holiday Pastry is perfect for European-style breakfasts.

Appreciating art in peace

Art enthusiasts will appreciate living in Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San because there are quite a few well-known art spaces in the area. Nearby ICONSIAM has Art Trails, a new program that features multi-discipline art by both local and international artists, while warehouse-turned-lifestyle hub Jam Factory also hosts cool exhibitions every so often. You can also take a quick ferry ride to art-focused mall River City Bangkok on the other side of the river and enjoy a day visiting its galleries. Come early so you can have the place almost all to yourself.

Enjoying under-the-radar restaurants

Thonburi, for centuries, has been the epitome of great food. And that legacy still lives on through generations of restaurants, from those withstanding the test of time to newbies joining the evolving eating scene.

When craving for something quick and price-friendly, it’s easy to swing by local shops that have been operating in the neighborhood for decades, such as Je Ju Noodle, which is famous for its pink noodle soup; Lek Tom Yum, which serves some of the tastiest tom yum on this side of the river; and seafood restaurant Ann Tha Din Daeng. For a fancier dining experience, Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San residents can easily come to Baan Phraya for an exquisite Thai meal by talented young chef Parchara “Pom” Pirapak, Tense for delicious fusion cuisine, or choose from one of the countless restaurants in ICONSIAM, including the one-Michelin-starred Blue by Alain Ducasse.

Partying all night and not have to worry about driving home

It’s nice to know that you can go on a bender and get home in one piece—on foot. (Take Thonglor or Phloen Chit out of the picture because these hot spots are too expensive for most of us.) Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San is more affordable compared to downtown Bangkok, with a good number of places for after-hours fun.

Treat yourself to fine wine in a casual ambience at W8 on Soi Charoen Nakhon 10 or take your evening to great heights, literally, at ThreeSixty Rooftop & Jazz Lounge on the 31st floor of Millennium Hilton Bangkok. There’s also The Bar at The Peninsula, one of the area’s best-kept secrets.

Commuting across Bangkok by boat

Residents of Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San take advantage of their proximity to the Chao Phraya River by hopping on the ferries that service routes from its piers to many locations across Bangkok. ICONSIAM, for example, has a free shuttle boat to Charoenkrung.

Boat rides along the river are cheap, frequent, and convenient, and can significantly shorten one’s commute, especially when compared to driving on the road during peak hours (ugh).

Watching New Year’s Eve fireworks from an exclusive spot

Another great perk of living in Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San: you can watch all the eye-popping year-end fireworks over the Chao Phraya River without having to jostle for a spot among the crowds. It’s even better for those living in a high-rise building as they can have a watch party on their balcony, in the living room, or on its rooftop for incredible views that not everybody gets to have.

ICONSIAM’s fireworks show is always the biggest in the neighborhood and the luxury hotels along the river also have their own pyrotechnic displays every year. You can also take in the fireworks from neighboring rooftop bars like ThreeSixty or other bars in Charoenkrung, which are only one shuttle boat away.

Getting to do what others can’t every day

There are many unique things to do and experience in Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San that evade residents from other hoods. If you’re spiritual, you can easily walk to many Chinese shrines and offer prayers to the gods. There’s the Mazu shrine at Lhong 1919 and the Guan Yu shrine near Thang Nguan Hah Vintage House.

Bookworms will be happy to know that they can walk to independent bookstore Candide in The Jam Factory to find their next best read, while the tech savvy can snatch a new iPhone before anyone else at the Apple store in ICONSIAM. (Imagine not having to wake up super early just to queue up!)

To have all these exclusive experiences of Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San, you can take FLO by Sansiri into consideration. This new property under Thailand’s respected brand takes a coveted location on Somdet Chao Phraya Road, rising tall with 22 floors and a total of 508 units under the concept of ‘Let Life Flow’, not to mention its close proximity to major spots like ICONSIAM. Plus, it is only 350 meters away from BTS Klongsan station.

You can now pop into the Sales Gallery and have a sneak peek into the actual space you can own (with the price starting from 2.99 million baht).
