The best pizza in Bangkok

The absolute best pizza in Bangkok, from simple margherita slices to slice with overload of toppings

Bangkok boasts a fair share of international cuisines but when it comes to pizza, “unacceptable” variations such as pineapple-topped slices or ketchup-laden pies are usually synonymous with the city’s pizza offerings. But there is a lot more to that. The city boasts plenty of establishments where you can indulge in succulent slices, from the authentic Italian-style pies to the larger-than-life New York style pizza with mile-high toppings.

Marked by a colorful façade, Soho Pizza is a grab-and-go eatery where you can order either an entire 18-inch, thin-crust pie or pizza by the slice. Variations range from the classic cheese pizza with caciocavallo (stretched-curd cheese made from cow’s milk), mozzarella and parmesan, to a more creative seafood option with marinated shrimp, lemon cream and pepper.

With two outlets in Bangkok, Pizza Massilia is steered by chef Luca Appino who delivers Massilia’s signature Neapolitan-style pizzas. The dough is specially made from organic flour sourced from Italian producer Mulino Marino, and yields a tender yet crispy crust that elevates simple flavors like the classic Margherita. The crust also makes for a good base for heartier pizzas topped with ingredients like octopus and potato, and mortadella cold cut and burrata. Gluen-free option is also on offer.

Inspired by his hometown in New York City, chef Arnie Marcella gives Italian staples an urban twist at this pizza joint at 72 Courtyard. As the name Carbar connotes (the name is a play on the word “carbohydrates”), carb-filled treats are the specialty here. Try the hand-cut pappardelle (B380) with scrumptious duck ragu and creamy parmesan, or the al dente-cooked bucatini “clam’duja” (B450), featuring spicy nduja sauce, clams and spicy sausage. The Neapolitan-style pizza (B350) is delicious as expected, with a slightly crispy crust and a chewy texture.

This pizzeria in Ekkamai brings a slice of New York to Bangkok. Just like the perfect New York-style pizza, the slices churned out at Pizzeria Mazzie have a crispy crust that still retains a chewy texture. Toppings are varied and, at times, unexpected. For an authentic NYC pizza experience, go for the Pizzeria Mazzie Brooklyn Classic Cheese (B350), a simple choice that packs in the flavors of house-cooked tomato sauce, fior di latte mozzarella, parmesan and oregano.

Neapolitan-style pizza is what’s promised at Cantina. Here, the dough undergoes a 48-hour natural fermentation process, resulting in a base with a flavor similar to sourdough. Try the classic Diavola (B380) topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, spicy Italian salami, black olives and fresh basil, or go for the Parma Ham & Burrata (B520) if you prefer your pie with a smoky flavor.

Peppina

This Italian mainstay is known for authentic Neapolitan-style pizza and probably needs to further introduction. We recommend simple toppings like margherita; and prosciutto with mozzarella, rocket and parma ham.
