“We haven’t changed any of the house’s original structure. The additionals are only the bar area, the weight-bearing pole and furniture.” Patina’s co-founder Kor says, describing how they turned an old two-story house in Talad Noi into a cool new cafe. You can easily see what Kor means—the facade retains the stone balconies and wrought iron window grills of yesteryear, while you have paint peeling from the walls. The overall result: a retro-chic vibe that’s very Insta-worthy.
The house, called Baan Liaw Lae, wasn’t normally open for visitors unless it was being used for a big occasion or event. Decorated in the Thai-Chinese ancient style, everything in the house follows traditional feng shui principles.
Hopefully this translates into good luck and energy for Patina. The bar they added to the main dining room features a long counter from which you can order a cup of espresso (B80 to B120) and some nibbles. Patina’s drip coffee is another highlight. Choose which bean you’d like and watch the slow and rather mesmerizing drip process at the counter. Non-caffeinated drinks are also available, such as a rich chocolate drink (B120) or Senryoku Matcha (B140), an intense green tea drink.
The cafe is only serving baked goods while it’s on soft opening, such as lemon tart (B140), mini chocolate donuts (B60 each), croissants (B80 each) and vanilla eclair (B140). An upcoming grand opening will see Patina launch a complete menu that includes heartier meals and lunch plates.
