You may have come to Char for the amazing vistas of downtown Bangkok, but you’ll definitely stay for the food. Nestled on the top floors of Hotel Indigo Bangkok, Char Bangkok has a view money can’t buy—a sweeping panorama of skyscrapers looming over the lush gardens of the US Ambassador’s residence. But it’s not just the views that pique interest. The fine-dining restaurants, as it turns out, has a knack for churning out glorious plates of perfectly prepared fare.
Char was shortened from “charcoal” so you can probably guess the restaurant’s main focus. French chef Lionel Vinatieri delivers a full-on repertoire that highlights grilled meats and seafood such as a beautifully presented Tomahawk Wagyu steak and a juicy North Pacific black cod. Dishes like the seared Hokkaido scallops with mango and Chiang Mai concassee (B560), foie gras crumble (B590) and lobster ravioli (B720) also warrant inclusion.
To complement the concept of luxurious-yet-casual dining, Char presents an elegant mix of warm-hued woods, art deco brass details, indigo-colored walls (no surprise) and a huge fresco featuring vintage film stars.
Francesco Moretti of Revolucion Cocktail was tasked to create a drink list exclusively for Char Bar, and the results are quite impressive. Our favorites include Kanagawa (Absolut infused sencha rose syrup, lime, brown sugar, plum,B300) and Memory (Absolut infused strawberry, mashmellow, lime lavender blue pea syrup, kaffir leaf, Angostura, egg white, peach bitter, B320).
