Chef Thitid Tassanakajohn's brainchild eatery, Baan, has been dishing out soulful home-cooked fare that, though may be simple in looks, bursts with sensational flavors on leafy Wireless Road. A sister restaurant, Backyard, is set to pull off the same task in the fast-growing suburban neighborhood of Srinakarin.
Tucked in the family-friendly Jas Urban Srinakarin community mall, Backyard’s interiors, designed by Ekkasit Jaeng-anghin, the same guy who designed Thitid’s other outlets, is at odds with the homey comfort fare on its menu with a modern, dimly lit dining room dominated by contemporary wooden gables hanging from the ceiling. The venue also has an adjacent wine cellar that stores bottles—mostly New World —that have been selected to perfectly pair with flavorful Thai grub.
Baan’s highlight dishes have made their way into Backyard’s menu, including moo kluk foon (B250), a stir-fried, free-range pork dish with shrimp paste that’s given an acidic kick with lime juice. Another must-try is the crispy morning glory salad (B200) that combines a spicy mix of minced pork and shrimp with battered morning glory leaves. What sets Backyard apart from its city-center counterpart are pasta dishes that meticulously fuse Thai elements like fettuccine green curry with beef sirloin (B290) and spaghetti with massaman lamb curry (B450).
Fruity cocktails carry cool Thai names like Lukthung (B250), which mixes Kai lychee vodka with white wine, Hale’s Blue Boy syrup, strawberry juice and lime juice.
