On the banks of the Chao Phraya River stands Iconsiam, a mall whose architectural design draws inspiration from the graceful curves of the bai sri banana leaf vessel and the traditional Thai sabai shawl. Embodying both modernity and heritage, within its impressive 750,000 square metres this mega-retail landmark offers an exceptional collection of luxury shops, world-class entertainment venues and top-tier dining outlets.

There is much to admire here but if you find yourself flagging from all the retail therapy at opulent boutiques, you’ll discover opportunities aplenty to refuel with a well-deserved bite. The range of cuisines available is wide, so here are a few tasty Time Out suggestions to get your teeth into:

SookSiam

This unique concept restaurant at Iconsiam gathers Thailand’s rich culinary heritage under one roof – literally. Think of it as a miniature kingdom of Thailand, where the heady flavours of the north, north-east, central plains and sizzling south come together in a feast for the senses. Essentially, it’s a big bite of the nation’s diverse food culture in a comfortable and immersive setting.

From the heart of the north-east, Phu Thai Kai Yang is a standout eatery from Sakon Nakhon, famous for its authentic Isan-style grilled chicken. From the Central plains, Pad Thai Ari serves up plates of pad thai made with Ratchaburi radish and fresh shrimp. The far north is represented by Khao Soi Lamduan Fa Ham, a beloved Chiang Mai hot spot that puts its own spin on the iconic noodle dish khao soi by insisting on serving only short noodles – a choice that, they say, enhances the dish’s flavour. And from the sultry south is Nam Cha Bang Bao, a Nakhon Si Thammarat haven famed for its signature roti offerings and expertly brewed tea.

White Plate by Lobster & More

Here, you’re in for a treat from both land and sea. The restaurant’s commitment to fresh, high-quality seafood and prime cuts of meat is evident in every dish, with standout options like farfalle with wagyu in cream sauce. Australian wagyu beef is also a highlight. The restaurant’s clever touch is its use of all-white plates, which inspired its name. Opt for the outdoor seating area for a view of Iconsiam’s river park overlooking the Chao Phraya River.

Head to Baan Khanitha, where the ingredients are carefully sourced from the restaurant’s own organic farm. Do try the signature known as ‘“The Heritage’”, which is a culinary celebration of the finest authentic Thai flavours. Zheng Dou Imperial Kitchen

Originally a Chinese restaurant within the luxurious Anantara Sathorn Hotel, Zheng Dou has expanded with its latest stand-alone branch at Iconsiam. This lively outlet positively shines thanks to a refined take on Hong Kong-style dim sum and seafood, all crafted by experienced Chinese chefs. What makes this spot even more special is its ‘“Imperial Kitchen’” concept, offering exclusive dishes you won’t find at other branches.

James Boulangerie

True to its name, James Boulangerie offers croissants – arguably some of the best in town – in a restaurant setting overlooking the Chao Phraya River. Crafted and baked by celebrated Iron Chef Thailand champion Chef James (aka Phachara Thekkingkiet), a pioneer in bringing high-quality croissants to the country, his menu has evolved to feature a creative mix of around 70 Thai-inspired dishes that blend the best of traditions with a modern touch of innovation. Standout options include salted egg squid, Phuket-style braised pork, green curry with tender beef cheeks, and the inventive croissant sai ua. For those with a sweet tooth, a signature croissant filled with velvety Thai pandan custard offers an indulgent finish with a fantastic fusion of French pastry and Thai flavour.

Bread Street Kitchen & Bar

This new flagship venue marks an exciting partnership between Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay and Thailand’s Tanachira Group. Opening its doors in late December 2024, following the success of its Emsphere branch, the 608-square-metre space captures the essence of Ramsay's iconic St. Paul’s restaurant in London. Sporting industrial-chic décor and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, the venue offers sweeping views of Bangkok’s skyline and the Chao Phraya River. The menu is quintessential Ramsay: British classics with a contemporary twist. Must-try dishes include his famed beef wellington, lobster moilee, spicy tuna tartare, fish and& chips, and sticky toffee pudding. You can also unwind with a drink or set the tone for a night out at the bar, sipping expertly crafted cocktails while seated comfortably on plush stools.

TAPAS by Nan Charcoal Grill brings the bold, sun-kissed flavours of Spain straight to the heart of Bangkok. Whether you're a seasoned connoisseur or a curious newcomer wanting to explore Spanish cuisine, this inviting venue offers a welcoming space for all. When it comes to the tastes of Iberia, in amongst the many gems are the coastal treasures, which are a must-try, particularly fiery prawns pil pil and txangurro-baked spider crab. Both are fine examples of the region’s famed seafood offerings and a true taste of Spain.

Wan Pordee

Wan Pordee, a Thai phrase that translates to ‘just the right sweetness’, brings a slice of Chiang Mai's dessert culture to Bangkok. This cafe stays true to its roots, using locally sourced ingredients from the north. Among the standout offerings is pailin siam, a delightful fusion of Thai favourites that includes vermicelli noodles paired with tub-tim grop (crispy water chestnuts), served with refreshing coconut milk and ice. It’s the perfect pick-me-up when you’re craving a cooling, revitalising boost on a sultry Bangkok day. Also not to be missed is kanom tom: chewy rice flour balls stuffed with sweet coconut. This traditional treat is becoming harder to find in the city and here you get the real deal.
