Bangkokians are still beaming with pride after the city was last week ranked second-best in the world, just behind Cape Town, in Time Out’s global ranking. As we all know, the nation has long been celebrated for its unique fusion of artistry, culinary excellence and exceptional hospitality. So, it’s perhaps no surprise that a second Thai metropolis has made it to this year’s 50 best cities list.
Known as the Rose of the North, Chiang Mai came in at a very respectable 28th place, ranking it ahead of other renowned destinations such as Vienna (No.30), Tokyo (No.31) and Perth (No.33). But it's not surprising when you consider that Chiang Mai is a city where modernity, tradition and nature meet so harmoniously. Rooted in traditional Lanna culture, it is bursting with things to do – from myriad restaurants and brunch spots to a plethora of activities that reflect its vibrant charm.
Commenting on the city’s placement, Time Out’s Chiang Mai editor Aydan Stuart said, ‘What makes this place so special is the friendly nature and open arms culture that really defines the north. Whether you’re seeking solace, soul-searching or simply craving adventure, this city delivers time and time again.’
In fact, Thailand is one of just two countries in Asia with more than one city on the list. China has three cities featured – Shanghai (No. 9), Hong Kong (No. 14) and Beijing (No. 27).
If the best cities list stretched to 100, Thailand would surely steal more spots. This incredible country bursts with vibrant cultures and greets visitors with a warm, friendly smile. With stunning destinations like Phuket and Koh Samui featured in the third season of HBO’s hit series The White Lotus, now is the perfect time to get out and explore all that’s on offer.
