For many, Studio Ghibli’s music is as iconic as the animation itself, weaving a spellbinding connection to the characters and worlds that Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata have created. Now, that magic is coming to life in Bangkok, and yes, it’s going to be every bit as enchanting as you think.
On May 29, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra will descend on the Thailand Cultural Centre to perform a selection of timeless tracks from Ghibli’s most beloved films in an event called Anime and Theatre Music. This one-night-only concert is an invitation to let go of your grown-up cynicism, revisit your childhood wonder, and indulge in a nostalgic sonic journey.
Leading the night is conductor Shimpei Sasaki, a force in Japan’s classical scene who brings an intensity to every performance. He’s joined by Seiko Niizuma, a prominent Japanese theatre actor, adding another layer of theatricality to the evening. And as if that weren’t enough, the performance will feature Tomoharu Ushida on piano.

One Summer Day, the hauntingly beautiful piece from Spirited Away, will surely have you drowning in memories of Chihiro’s quiet resilience, while Kiki’s Delivery Service’s upbeat melodies will lift your spirits like the titular witch on her flying broom. The evening will also feature tracks from Howl’s Moving Castle, and yes, the ever-popular My Neighbor Totoro. The concert will include iconic pieces from The Sound of Music.

Tickets are priced from B1,000 to B3,000 through Thaticket Major. The Thai Youth Orchestra will also join the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra to open the show, ensuring the night kicks off beautifully.
