Post-COVID tourism seems to have opened up new opportunities for Thai hospitality groups, and these opportunities are no longer limited within Thailand. The latest hotel conglomerate that’s exploring new locales is Dusit Thani, one of Thailand’s most established—and traditional—hospitality groups, which has announced its plans to open, not just one, but two hotels in the historic city of Kyoto, Japan in 2023. Yes, this year!
Dusit Thani Kyoto is set to be a zen-inspired, uber-minimalist structure with 150 rooms and suites. Interiors will be nspired by the classic aesthetics of Kyoto and Ayutthaya, the old capital cities of Japan and Thailand, respectively. The hotel will be located in Hanganji Monzen-machi, which is a scant 850 meters away from Kyoto station. It will also be in close proximity to Nishi Honghanjo temple as well as many of Kyoto’s historical attractions. A Devarana Wellness spa will be on hand to pamper holidaymakers with Thai-style treatments, while one of the restaurants will feature a unique food menu designed by Bo Songvisava and Dylan Jones, the couple behind the now-closed Bo.lan.
ASAI, Dusit’s more modern and affordable accommodations, will be located in Shijo-Karasuma, close to the bustling Nishiki Market. All 114 rooms will boast interior designs inspired by a juxtaposition of Japanese and Thai cultures, and equipped with facilities every modern traveler needs. The hotel’s casual dining room will also serve, alongside local specialties, famous Thai street-inspired food and snacks including mango sticky rice.
ASAI Kyoto Shijo will open in June while Dusit Thani Kyoto is set to open in September. Dusit Thani Group is also looking to open new properties in Fukuoka, Osaka, and Tokyo.
