For the sixth year running, Time Out has rolled out its list of the World’s 40 Coolest Neighborhoods. For 2023, top honors went to Laureles in Medellin, Colombia. The No. 2 spot was given to Smithfield in Dublin, Ireland, followed closely by Carabanchel in Madrid, Spain. Sheung Wan in Hong Kong stands as the highest-ranking Asian neighborhood at No. 5, while our very own Song Wat secured a spot at No. 39, just barely surpassing Cantonments in Accra, Ghana.
For over half a century, Time Out has dedicated itself to inspiring people to explore and enjoy their own city. Each year, urbanites are quizzed multiple times about their city—where they like to hang out, what they love to do, and what they think is cool. The results are then filtered and further dissected by editors from more than 200 editions across the globe, using factors such as community initiatives, new and vibrant openings, accessibility to green spaces, walkability, and overall livability. The outcome is a list of the top 40 must-visit neighborhoods worldwide that offer the best experiences in terms of food, drinks, and sights.
This year’s top-ranking neighborhood, Laureles in Medellin, Colombia, is praised for its tree-lined streets, bustling dining scene, and an intoxicating vibe that blends the old and the new Colombia. Sheung Wan in Hong Kong is picked for its mix of contemporary art galleries, trendy cafés, and unique shops, all nestled amid ancient temples and traditional seafood stalls.
Bangkok’s Song Wat follows the same formula. Time Out Bangkok's editorial team nominated this small neighborhood for its tranquil charm, community engagement, pedestrian-friendly environment, and a mix of new businesses that aren’t alien to the old ones. It's the kind of area where you'd love to spend some time after a hectic workweek.
