An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck Myanmar at 1.20pm local time, shaking things up at coordinates 95.73°E, 21.89°N, with a depth of 10 kilometres, according to GEOFON.
The vibrations caused high-rise buildings in Bangkok and surrounding areas to sway unexpectedly. Quickly passed around Instagram videos showed water sloshing out of rooftop swimming pools. Some people in skyscrapers initially thought they were just feeling a bit lightheaded – only to realise it was nature's way of reminding us who's boss. The commotion led to officials, office workers and students making a swift exit from buildings to safer ground.
Bangkok’s last memorable earthquake experience dates back to 2014, when tremors from a 6.3 magnitude quake in northern Thailand caused similar swaying in the capital. Buildings wobbled, nerves rattled and a building collapsed in the Bangsue area, but fortunately there was no significant damage.
MRT and BTS services have been paused temporarily as a safety measure following the earthquake. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported in Thailand so far.
