If you still remember the fist-clenching 97 minutes of 2004's horror excellence Shutter, well, be prepared to get spooked out once again with a new scary flick from Thai-native film prodigy Banjong Pisanthanakun soon. But this time, the director does not plot the scare tactics alone, as he tags team with South Korean cinema mastermind Na Hong-jin.
Hong-jin is none other than the director who gave birth to the critically acclaimed horror, The Wailing, back in 2016. The Medium (Rang-Zong: in Thai) is the title of the project that the South Korean director will join, as a producer, with Pisanthanakun.
With local production by popular film studio GDH559 (Bad Genius, Happy Old Year), The Medium is reportedly—according to Variety—involved a frightening story of a shaman's inheritance in the Northeastern part of Thailand that encounters a malevolent deity being that takes possession of a family member.
Hong-jin's company Northern Cross and Korean studio Showbox take part in developing this upcoming movie. Now, it is during the post-production process and set for a premiere at Berlin's European Film Market later this year.
Pisanthanakun rose to cinema superstardom from his joint debut with Thai director Parkpoom Wongpoom for Shutter (2004), which received both commercial and critical success and brought by Hollywood for a remake treatment in 2008. After his acclaim triumph from the story of a haunted photographer, Pisanthanakun then embarked on another scary blockbuster, Alone (2007), and then ventured on different genres like Hello Stranger (2010) as well as Pee Mak (2013), the latter of which is Thailand's highest-grossing film of all time.
Meanwhile, Na Hong-jin is a respected director from South Korea who's well known for his Cannes Film Festival stunners like The Chaser (2008) and The Wailing (2016). Both films were met with rave reviews by critics for their highly thrilling elements and gory features while subtly tacking social issues in South Korea.
Fans of both directors can now get ready to get jumpy and shocked by The Medium sometime this year. In the meantime, check out Thailand's best horror movies curated by us in which two of Pisanthanakun's made the cut. Check out an international poster of The Medium below.
