The Mid-Autumn Festival is not many moons away and that means leading hotels and brands in Bangkok are trying to eclipse each other with their interpretation of mooncakes through traditional and new flavors as well as outside-the-box packaging. Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok reaches for the stars (or should we say moon) to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival once again with unique offerings.
As opposed to last year's futuristic moon-shaped mooncake box, Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok has gone with a whimsical route this time around. In line with its design-forward ethos, Kimpton derives inspiration from the Chinese folklore of the noble Moon Rabbit, a loyal companion to Moon Goddess Chang'e, and gives it tangible form in the shape of a crafted wooden box adorned with two rabbits gazing up at a harvest moon. An image synonymous with the time-honored festival celebrated in various Asian countries. Not only the box would make a whimsical home decor but also carries auspicious touch for recipients as, in the folklore, Moon Rabbit pounds the elixir of immortality for the Moon Goddess.
Inside the box, lie four distinct flavors of Kimpton mooncakes crafted with finesse in collaboration with Chef Justin Tan, a renowned Singaporean chef and mastermind behind the successes of bakery boutiques and patisseries across Asia and in Paris. Chef Tan infuses his culinary journey and fond childhood memories as secret ingredients into these four flavors.
East meets west in Chocolate Orange Mochi which pairs luscious Parisian chocolate and citrus fruit with an extra kick of coffee aroma to perk up your appetite. Go-to flavor Durian with Egg Yolk showcases the richness of paste made with the king of Thai fruits which deliciously contrasts with salted egg yolk for a delectable result. Inspired by a popular sandwich enjoyed by Chef Tan during his eight years in Taiwan, Taro Pork Floss should pique both your curiosity and appetite. Taro and pork floss are often paired in Taiwanese cuisine and you can discover why as they deliver savory and sweet symphony on your palate. Inspired by S'pore dessert kueh salat, Pandan Mochi with Egg Yolk is filled with fragrant pandan custard and steamed glutinous rice. Creamy, sticky, and sweet.
