Former leader of National Council for Peace and Order Prayuth Chan-ocha manages to stay in power and becomes the 29th prime minister of Thailand, defeating Future Forward Party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, the only nominee of the “pro-democracy” bloc.
Members of elected House of Representative and junta-appointed senators convened yesterday (5 June) at TOT auditoriumon Chaeng Wattana for prime ministerial voting. Of all 747 possible votes, the junta leader secures the most votes, garnering 500 votes while Thanatorn polled 244 votes, after more than 10-hour debate.
The vote came after the resignation former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva from a Democrat Party MP as a result of the party’s resolution to support General Prayuth to become the prime minister.
