Scroll through Thai social media this week and you’ll probably spot a national ID card that looks a little different. The newest hotspot is the registration office at Phitsanulok Municipality. Locals now queue up there in full traditional Thai dress to apply for or renew their IDs.
Wait, is that even allowed? Yep. Ministry of Interior rules permit traditional attire, contemporary Thai-style looks and clothes made from Thai fabric. The only catch is that your face stays fully visible, so no hats, sunglasses or anything covering it, and you need to look neat and appropriate.
If this rings a bell, you’ve got a good memory. Back in 2018, the hit period drama Love Destiny had fans asking to pose in Ayutthaya-era costume, and officials gave it the green light. This time the trend comes as Thailand pushes for chut thai to join UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list.
Fancy trying it next time your card expires? Raid your mum’s wardrobe, or shop these Thai labels reworking traditional fabrics for everyday wear.
