Awakening Bangkok, Time Out Bangkok’s signature lighting festival, is making a comeback to the historic quarters of Charoenkrung-Talad Noi.
After being pushed back last year due to COVID, the event is back on its original schedule: in December, when the cool breeze makes it ideal to walk down dark alleys and gaze at awe-inspiring illuminated sculptures.
The upcoming Awakening Bangkok will once again feature local artists who, working with the theme “Endless Tomorrow”, will exhibit illuminated creations that highlight sustainability and immortality. Just like the past editions of Awakening Bangkok, these installations and sculptures will take up space in long-forgotten structures, historic mansions, and dead-end alleys, nudging these areas awake and bringing them back to the light.
New locations this year include O.P. Place, one of Bangkok’s longest-running department stores; East-Asiatic Building, a Venetian-style structure that used to house the multinational trading company of the same name; and a bunch of old shophouses on Charoenkrung. Familiar locations such as The Grand Postal Building, Marine Police Lodge, and Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel will once again host exhibitions.
Awakening Bangkok will be welcoming an international showcase for the first time, curated by a team from iLight, a similar type of light festival in Singapore.
Awakening Bangkok 2022 will take place at various locations on Charoenkrung Road and in Talad Noi from 16 to 25 December. Learn more about the lighting event here.
