German travel agency DERTOUR has released an accommodation price index of 2020, which compiles the data from the calculations of the median price of a one-night stay in a three-, four-, or five-star hotel around the world after August 2020 when travel restrictions were mostly imposed.
Thailand's Bangkok and Phuket appear at number 4 and 5, respectively, on the top five cities with the largest accommodation price drop, behind Amsterdam, San Francisco, and Vancouver.
At the same time, the 2020 Average Hotel Prices list also sees Phuket as the destination with the biggest price drop by -76.8% with an average price of a room at €25. Bangkok, meanwhile, encounters a price drop by -64.9% and an average price at €37.
Interestingly, the locations with the largest increase in hotel price following the pandemic and ensuing lockdown are Zurich, Switzerland (€210); Los Angeles, USA (€202); New York, USA (€197); Geneva, Switzerland (€178); and Venice, Italy (€178).
DER Touristik's CEO for Central Europe Dr. Ingo Burmester believes that, "Travel itself will be cheap in 2021." So let's keep our fingers crossed and hope we can go out and about freely again.
