Who is Daniel Didyasarin?

Twenty-one-year-old half-Thai, half American Daniel Didyasarin is a singer, songwriter and member of the band Penny Time and City Plant, which is known for its alternative rock 90s-inspired tunes. Recently, however, Daniel took a break from band life to work on release his first solo album called Bedroom.

What you probably don’t know about Daniel.
His music is heavily inspired by alternative rock, but he also credits Michael Jackson as an influence. “I used to dance to Michael Jackson’s songs,” Daniel laughs. “I’m still a fan now, thanks to the movie club at my primary school for showing Moonwalker. Michael’s songs were playing the whole time throughout the movie.” But over time, he developed a love and better appreciation for alt-rock.

He wrote all the songs himself.
Daniel is not just a singer and performer. His talents extend to the songwriting process as well. He likes to jot down lyrics and poems on his phone when he is inspired by a certain thing or a situation.

He gets inspiration for songwriting from various sources.
“I listened to Britrock bands a lot in my teenage years, and bands like The Velvet Underground, Nirvana, and The Strokes. So when I started to write songs and make music, my tunes were similar to their songs,” Daniel explains. “I tried to write pop before but that didn’t turn out so well.” Daniel laughs.

Dreams also provide some inspiration for his songs. “Sometimes, right when I wake up, I still remember smells and how I felt in my dream, but I’ve never actually written songs based on these dreams. Most of the lyrics come from real and personal stories.”

He values his private space.
His solo album Bedroom is attributed to his own private space, where he created most of his songs. “I think, when we feel sad, hurt, or happy, most of the time they happen in the bedroom. So I just wanted to give credit and pay respect to that.”

What else can we expect from him?
According to Daniel, his upcoming singles will be more upbeat and fun. Most of the songs will be in English. He will also be doing a lot more live concerts, which he really enjoys doing. “I just started going solo and writing songs in Thai, so it’s going to be very challenging for me. And I still have a lot to learn.”

Where can we catch him when he’s not on stage?
Daniel loves going to live concerts, so you’ll probably see him in the audience the next time a popular alternative rock band comes to town. He’s also a second year student at Thammasat University.
