If the Bangkok side of the Chao Phraya has Bumrungrad, Thonburi has Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun, a private hospital that comes complete with world-class medicine and luxurious facilities. The only difference, a significant one at that, is that the latter is wholly owned by Siriraj Hospital, Thailand’s oldest and largest public hospital, which was founded by King Chulalongkorn in 1888. So while well-to-do patients enjoy their pricey medical treatments, they can rest assured that part of their money goes into subsidizing public healthcare services for those in need.
