There are a number of trendy, wellness-focused treatments that aims to revitalize your body and destress, from vitamin boosters injected to your blood stream to floating in saltwater in a sensory-deprived floating pod. But have you tried putting yourself in a sealed chamber where the temperature is set extremely low. We're talking subarctic levels and no, you won’t freeze to death. It’s actually the latest trend aimed at revitalizing the body. And you can now try it at Cryo, a cryotherapy-focused wellness center in Thonglor.
Located on the second floor of The Taste Thonglor, this wellness establishment (originally from Dubai) introduces health freaks and the curious to cryotherapy, a science that exposes the body to uninhabitable cold temperatures for several minutes. The trend originated in Japan in the ’70s but only came to Europe, Australia and America in recent years. Scientific research done on the therapy suggests that it could help with blood circulation, metabolism, and the prevention of inflammation or even Alzheimer’s decease.
The Bangkok outpost of Cryo offers a wide-range of super-cooling treatments, from a full-body therapy to more localized options. Guests are first asked to fill in a health questionnaire and go through a consultation with a specialist to find out which kind of treatment would suit them best. You are then asked to put on chic undergarments, a bathrobe and cute slippers prior to embarking on your cold journey.
Once you’re all geared up, staff will lead you to the therapy room where you enter the state-of-the-art Cryo Arctic frozen chamber and do your best to stay in there for three minutes. The temperature could drop down to -140 degree Celsius—colder than the lowest temperature recorded on earth. (Fun fact: Did you know that body hair can actually freeze?) The treatment supposedly helps reduce pain, boost recovery and improve weight loss. We also noticed that we slept a lot better the night after the treatment.
Localized cryo treatments use the Cryo Penguin, a machine that emits sub-zero nitrogen-cooled air to simulate cell rejuvenation, and help alleviate pain and tissue damage in specific areas of the body.
The wellness center also offers other therapies that don’t include the use of cold therapy. There’s Cryo Press, a machine that helps relieve leg pain through compression and decompression techniques. It’s particularly recommended for athletes and fitness fanatics who want to recover quickly from muscle pains and sores. Cryo also offers beauty treatments such as Energizing Light Therapy, which uses infrared technology to boost collagen production in the skin.
A session at Cryo is sold by credit (B3000/credit). Contact the center to find out how many credits are required for each treatment and the perfect treatments tailored for you.
