Hollywood’s live-action interpretation of Agatha Christy’s Murder on the Orient Express makes its way into theaters this month. Why don’t you borrow inspiration from the movie (and the book) and make your vacation the passage of a lifetime? We’re not talking about flying to Istanbul or Europe to catch the train as in the movie; the Orient Express has a sister line that runs between Bangkok and Singapore—and it’s been operating for decades.
The Eastern and Oriental Express, aka E&O, has been regarded as Asia’s most luxurious train ever since it launched in 1993. The journey starts from Hua Lamphong station in Bangkok and winds it way through Thailand, making quick stops at the historic River Kwai Bridge in Kanchanaburi, before making its way to the charming town of Penang in Malaysia and, within three nights, ending up in Singapore.
Apart from elegant cabins, all of which feature an in-suite bathroom, top-notch amenities and gorgeous decor (cherrywood and elm burr paneling, fine fabric and plush carpets) the train also has a luxurious dining room, a bar with an outdoor balcony and a library/lounge for mingling with like-minded individuals. The trade-off? Prices are rather hefty (but worth it considering the beautiful, exotic views and impeccable service).
A trip from Bangkok to Singapore starts from US$2,480 (about B82,000) per person. www.belmond.com
