Unless you're bringing her (or him) to the relatively new five-star hotel on the street, Sukhumvit Soi 22 is by no means a destination to impress your well-heeled date. But Luna Lounge is all set to change this perception. Taking over the space vacated by the now-defunct popular dive bar Overground, the new venue brings a touch of glam to the area by completely transforming the former occupant’s loft-style interiors, and setting out a creative drinks list beyond your usual rum and coke.
The team behind Luna Lounge has transformed the space into a small yet elegant evening destination marked by gleaming lights, colorful upholstered couches and suede drapes. To add to the trippy nightclub vibe, drawings of full moons have been attached to the walls, while non-flammable plastic-like material hangs from the ceiling, forming shapes that resemble floating clouds.
Don’t limit yourself to beer (as the neighborhood regulars normally do). Serbian head bartender Ivan Stojanovic, who’s had experience slinging drinks in luxurious cruise ships and at Lady L Garden Bistro at Nai Lert Park Heritage Home, has come up with a set of signature drinks that tickle both your palate and fancy—provided you get to read what’s on the list. The menu appears blank and you will need UV flourescent light to see what’s written on it. (The gimmick is kind of cool at the beginning but becomes quite annoying later on.) We love the boldly flavored Crater in the Head, a drink that subdues chili-infused tequila with a mix of Southern Comfort, Grand Marnier, and passionfruit and watermelon syrup (B300). The whiskey-based F.A.C. has an interesting flavor profile—the nutty notes of amaretto are offset by the fruity flavors of peach purée, cranberry juice and lime (B300).
The bar chows are still a work in progress but you are welcome to order from a Thai restaurant nearby. Positioning itself as a night club, Luna Lounge keeps the party going by bringing in internationally renowned guest DJs and performers, and organizing themed events every now and then.
