Who needs gold nuggets when there are bounties of ‘black gold’ waiting to be uncovered right on our doorstep! Yep, you might not think it, but Australia is home to some of the world’s best truffle farms, with our nation’s cool climate regions rivaling traditional truffle powerhouses across Europe.

In Australia, truffles are considered a real delicacy, thanks to their intense, earthy taste and their incredibly short harvest season. In the Southern Hemisphere, that season runs in winter from June until the end of August, with many farms offering fungi fans the chance to unearth their own black nuggets (and enjoy a fancy truffle lunch too). For the ultimate experience, head to Manjimup in Western Australia – widely considered Australia’s truffle capital, producing more than 90 per cent of the country’s truffles. Or discover hidden gems, with exclusive truffle hunting and tasting experiences at boutique farms across Tasmania and Canberra. Happy hunting!

After a quick history lesson into the world of truffles – enough to make you consider a career change upon learning they fetch $2,500-$3,000 per kilo – you’ll venture into the paddock for 45 minutes of exploring. After hunting down a handful of these prized little fungi, you can also opt for a Truffle Hunt and Brunch ($175) or a lavish degustation lunch ($250).
