Time Out says

If wine by the waterfront is your recipe for a good night, then wander on down to the Old Wharf Restaurant. This polished yet relaxed establishment, located in Hobart’s luxurious MACq 01 hotel, sits on the historical base where traders once shipped premium Tasmanian produce around the world.

The Old Wharf Restaurant’s dining room tells the story of its seafaring past through design elements, like recycled wharf timber, iodised steel and fishing ropes. Led by chef Alvin Sim, the restaurant also nods to its waterfront bearings with a seafood-heavy menu, showcasing the finest Tasmanian produce from boutique growers and suppliers.

Dining dockside is an all-day affair, with the Old Wharf Restaurant welcoming guests daily from 6.30am to 11pm. Snag a seafront seat on the outdoor balcony and share rounds of Bruny Island oysters and salmon gravlax, followed by a fully Tasmanian charcuterie or cheese plate. A hearty ham and cheese toastie hits the spot in the cooler months, while battered fish and chips go down a treat in summer.

Dinner is the main event at the Old Wharf Restaurant, featuring a modern Australian menu that caters incredibly well to gluten-free and vegan guests. From the expansive open kitchen, you might catch glimpses of steak sizzling over the fire, chilli flakes being sprinkled over vodka pasta, or a golden seafood pie emerging hot from the oven.

No matter the time of day or the occasion, you can rely on the Old Wharf’s lengthy wine list for the perfect tipple. It leans on local vintners and brewers, including House of Arras, Frogmore Creek, Spotty Dog, Willie Smith and Deep South Brewing Co. If you have one glass too many, then just check in to one of MACq 01’s luxurious rooms or suites upstairs.
