A visit to New Zealand is never quite complete without a visit to Hobbiton, and the Tolkienite experience just got a whole lot more immersive – with the door to Aoeteroa’s most famous Hobbit Hole opening to the public for the very first time. Visitors to the Hobbiton Movie Set can now step inside the Hobbit Hole and live – if only for a moment – like Frodo himself (minus the hairy feet).
New Zealand’s dramatic landscape is Middle Earth-esque by nature, and the addition of Hobbiton – an immersive movie set hidden on a 1250-acre farm in the Matamata countryside – to the hilly island’s offering makes it a no-brainer for Lord of the Rings fans.
For years, the circular doors on Bagshot Row have remained firmly closed, but this year, they’ve opened to reveal a labyrinth of fully themed rooms and halls that offer a realistic Hobbit Hole experience. Designed with close consultation of the movie series and books, the Hobbit Hole features low, Hobbit-appropriate ceilings, earthy tones and decor that reflects that described in JRR Tolkien’s much-adored trilogy.
Brought to life by a team of illustrators, concept designers, art directors and production designers, the space features hand-painted features, Hobbit heirlooms and ‘easter eggs’ hidden throughout for dedicated fans. And as any Hobbit-enthusiast would hope, there’s a well-stocked pantry laden with the goods required to prepare a residing Hobbit’s multiple daily meals.
A visit inside the Hobbit Hole will now be included in any visit to Hobbiton – elevenses not included.
