As far as dream jobs go, getting paid to sleep surely tops the list. It’s right up there with professional chocolate taster, astronaut and wombat walker. But let’s be real – unlike these dreamy gigs, we’re not sure a career as cushy (or as lazy) as sleeping all day actually exists. Don’t hit the snooze button just yet though, because we’ve found the next best thing.

A five-star hotel in Tasmania is rewarding tired Aussies with a winter's worth of free stays, just for getting a good night's sleep. You won’t exactly be pocketing cash, but the more you sleep in, the less you pay, with $100 slashed off your hotel bill for every hour of continuous sleep over six hours (up to $300). When you do the girl maths, that means you’re practically making money, right?

The hotel in question is one of Tasmania’s most fabulous five-star gems, MACq 01, perched right on the River Derwent in Hobart’s historic waterfront district. Their dreamy winter ‘Pay by Sleep’ campaign came off the back of recent research conducted by the MACq 01 team, revealing that more than two-thirds of Aussies get less than eight hours of sleep per night, with 38 per cent averaging only six hours or less. Their survey of more than 1,000 Australians also found that getting a good night’s sleep is even more challenging in winter, with science showing we need an extra hour of sleep due to longer periods of darkness.

It’s not just doom scrolling that’s keeping us up at night. According to the analysis, the number one culprit standing in the way of a good sleep for Aussies was feeling too anxious or worried about work, bills and cost of living. If you’re thinking “relatable”, then consider this your sign to book a little Tassie vacay – particularly in the Slumber Suite at MACq 01.

The Slumber Suite is as dreamy as it sounds – picture yourself sipping bedtime tea on a water-facing balcony, sinking into a luxurious bubble bath, ordering room service from the specially curated sleep-inducing menu, and dozing off to bedtime stories under a snooze-inducing weighted blanket. MACq 01 is setting you up for success too, with extra touches, like scientifically backed lighting and temperature, calming lavender room scents, and a detailed sleep guide from sleep expert, Shea Morrison.

You’ll need to book a minimum two-night stay to be eligible for this dreamy ‘Pay by Sleep’ offer – not that we’re complaining. However, you will only earn $100 credit for any additional hour of continuous sleep over six hours (monitored and tracked by a Sleep Analyser), up to a maximum of $300 and applicable off the first night only. To break it down, those who stack up a perfect nine hours of slumber will bag their first night for free. You can find out more and book your Hobart getaway here
