Who doesn’t love scoring a bargain travel deal? In today’s economy, stretching your dollars on flights is crucial, especially since your trip will likely have you splurging elsewhere. But, where exactly should savvy travellers be booking their flights? Singapore, it seems.
A recent analysis by Money.com.au has ranked Australia’s top ten most popular international flights based on their value for money. They determined this by calculating the average cost of the five lowest fares for a direct flight to each destination across Australia's major airlines and dividing it by the total flight time.
Our friends in Western Australia have direct access to the best value international flight, with the 5.25-hour Perth to Singapore route costing just $1.41 per minute. Travelling to Singapore is a budget-friendly option across the board, with the eight-hour Melbourne to Singapore flight ranking as the second best value flight. At $1.78 per minute, this route also offers the best value for long-haul flights (more than six hours).
Sydneysiders are looking at an average of $2.10 per minute for the same international flight, while Brisbane faces the highest cost, with flights to Singapore averaging $3.18 per minute.
Want to join the hordes of Aussies flocking to Bali? Perth wins here, with the best bang-for-your-buck route, offering flights to Denpasar for a reasonable $1.96 per minute. Flights from Melbourne and Sydney to Bali also made the top ten, ranking in seventh and ninth place respectively.
The only other international destinations to make the top ten were New Zealand and Dubai, including flights from Melbourne to Auckland in fifth and the 14-hour and 20-minute journey from Sydney to Dubai in sixth.
