Australia is full of quirky happenings, but seeing thousands of Aussies donning nothing but their birthday suits? That’s sure to take anyone by surprise. Unless, of course, you were aware that New York-based photographer Spencer Tunick was photographing 5,500 nude bodies on Brisbane’s Story Bridge on Sunday, October 27.
Part of Melt Festival – Brisbane Powerhouse’s newest celebration of queer art and culture – Rising Tide is Tunick’s largest Australian installation yet and also marks the first time he’s ever worked on multiple installations with the same institution for an extended two-year project.
Reflecting on the event, Tunick described it as his “most inclusive installation to date.” He added, “This one is very special because it celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community and allies. Photographing all the participants on the bridge was like looking down the mouth of a whale, filled with love and diversity.”
Rising Tide acts as a sequel to Tide, a video exhibition showcasing snippets and stories from Tunick’s stripped-down shoreline shoot in Brisbane last year. You can check out this work at Brisbane Powerhouse from now until November 10.
In the meantime, here are some snaps from Tunick’s Rising Tide photoshoot in Brisbane.
