Sausage rolls hold a special place in the hearts of many Aussies. What’s not to love about juicy, spiced meat wrapped in a flaky, buttery jacket of pastry? Whether you’re in the heart of the city or the quiet countryside, you’re sure to find this nostalgic tuckshop treat in just about every bakery across Australia. But if you’re craving the crème de la crème of sausage rolls, you’ll want to head to Kenilworth Bakery in Queensland, which was recently crowned the home of Australia’s best sausage roll in 2024.
Every year, travel platform Wotif asks Aussies to vote for the best of the best in its annual Uniquely Aussie Awards. In 2024, they came up with six new categories, including best finger bun, best hotel bar, best surf club, best lookout point, best regional museum and best sausage roll. From more than a thousand votes, it was the classic sausage roll that really fired up the debate, raking in more votes than any other category.
Drumroll, please… the winner of Australia’s best sausage roll in 2024 went to Kenilworth Bakery. Located in Queensland's beautiful hinterland town of Kenilworth, this family-run bakery is a must-visit on any Sunshine Coast road trip. Having opened nearly a century ago in 1924, the bakery cranks out hundreds of pies, pastries, doughnuts and bread loaves daily – all baked in its original World Heritage-listed shop.
Kenilworth might be best known for its cream-stuffed or coffee-filled doughnuts, but the unsung hero is its house-made sausage roll. The bakery even runs a one-kilogram sausage roll challenge, where anyone who can finish the family-of-five-sized roll in one sitting receives all their money back. Howzat!
