When it comes to dream jobs, being a wombat walker is one we never saw coming. And that’s just the tip of the dream job iceberg in Tasmania this winter, where ten wild and wonderful roles are up for grabs. From truffle hunting with canine companions to wine tastings in luxurious vineyards and paranormal investigations at Australia’s oldest asylum, these adventures really are worth swapping your desk job for.

As part of its latest winter campaign, Tasmania is encouraging Aussies to take a break from the daily grind and cash in on their share of our nation’s record-high 200 million days of unused annual leave. There are ten charmingly unusual ‘odd jobs’ up for grabs, that promise an experience far beyond the average nine-to-five. While these roles are volunteer-based and don't come with cash rewards, all your travel expenses will be covered  – and we think you might just have the time of your life.

Curious about what roles you can apply for? First up is the absolutely adorable wombat walker position at East Coast Natureworld, where you’ll have the delightful task of guiding these fluffy creatures on their morning waddles. You can also work side-by-side with furry friends as a truffle snuffler at The Truffledore. Here, you’ll roam the winter landscape with a truffle-sniffin’ companion, unearthing hidden gems beneath the ground.

Not afraid of the cold? Pull on a pair of waders and plod through the brisk Tasmanian waters as an oyster organiser at Freycinet Marine Farm, or help guide astronomy buffs with nightly star gazing sessions at Rathmore House. You can also apply for roles as a sauna stoker at Little Beach Co, a soaksmith at Little Things Farm, a puffer nut at West Coast Wilderness Railway, a cave conductor at Wild Cave Tours, or a paranormal investigator at Willow Court: Australia’s oldest continually-run asylum.

We’ve saved the best for last. One super lucky Aussie will join the wine whisperers at Clover Hill, with the role involving a mix of tending to the vines and tasting your way through the winery’s full range.

Only ten jobs are up for grabs and to throw your hat in the ring, you must tell Discover Tasmania in 50 words or less why you want to swap your day job for an ‘odd job’. After applications close on Monday, July 8, each local business will hand-pick the lucky labourers. You can find out more about the roles and can submit your entry here.
