Given that Australia is home to world-class restaurants, theatres and galleries, it’s no surprise that our nation also has an impressive roster of hotels to match. You’ll find five-star stays dotted all across the country, ranking among the best not only in Australia but the entire world. And that’s not just according to us – it’s backed by more than half a million travellers who voted in the prestigious 2024 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.

Now in its 37th year, the luxe travel mag has unveiled its latest ranking of the World’s Best Hotels and Resorts. More than 575,000 cast their votes in the 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards survey, with each venue ranked by its overall satisfaction score. Since a five-star getaway might not be in the cards for everyone right now, these stays may have to live in your dreams for now.

Claiming the crown as the best hotel in Australia and New Zealand for 2024 is The Ritz-Carlton in Melbourne. At 80 storeys, it’s the tallest hotel in the country, boasting 257 stylish rooms, an infinity pool, regionally inspired spa packages and signature fine dining experiences. The Ritz-Carlton was also the only Australian hotel to crack Condé Nast’s list of the World’s Best Hotels in 2024, claiming the 41st spot.

Second place on the best hotels in Australia and New Zealand list went to Auckland’s Park Hyatt, while the ultra-lavish Como The Treasury in Perth came third. Housed within three 19th-century heritage-listed buildings, Como The Treasury is cosier than slipping into flannelette PJs yet as luxe as cashmere. It’s the place for those who are usually seen to not be seen, offering 48 minimalist rooms, in-house personal training, a heated indoor pool, and an award-winning restaurant overlooking the Swan River.

Sydney dominated the top ten, being home to five of Australia’s best hotels, including the newly-opened W Sydney in fourth, Capella Sydney in fifth, The Fullerton Sydney in sixth, Ace Hotel Sydney in eighth, and Four Seasons Hotel Sydney in tenth. Rounding out the top ten were Brisbane’s The Calile Hotel and Hobart’s The Tasman – the only two Aussie hotels recognised in the recently released World’s 50 Best Hotels list.

Condé Nast’s readers also voted on the Top Resorts in the World for 2024, with Kangaroo Island’s stunning Southern Ocean Lodge placing 29th. Having reopened in December 2023, this luxe lodge also reclaimed its position as the Best Resort in Australia. Southern Ocean Lodge previously held the honour in 2019, just before it was destroyed by bushfires that swept across Kangaroo Island in early 2020.
