Dear Alice Springs,
I’ve dreamt of meeting you since I could point to the Australian Outback on a map. I’d seen lots of photos and heard countless tales, yet still didn't know what to expect. The media doesn’t always give you a fair go, but I’ve never been one to judge based on rumours – and wow, you made a lasting impression. Dressed in shining red armour, you're strong and resilient – weathering the heat, the hardships and the history that's shaped you. With towering monoliths and awe-inspiring canyons, you're a breath of fresh (albeit very warm) air, an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. And with your vast desert plains, you’re an open book, waiting to share your true story with those who have time to listen.
Alice, you aren't like the girls I knew growing up. While I’ve got nothing but love for my homegal Sydney, there’s just something about you that makes spending time together almost addictive. Perhaps it’s your adventurous spirit, your timeless beauty or the rich history you so openly share – or maybe it's the magic of all three combined.
I didn’t have to travel far to meet you for the first time – just a quick two- or three-hour flight from any major Australian airport, perfect for a spontaneous long weekend. But for anyone yet to meet you, I'd suggest setting aside at least a week to experience everything you have to offer.

I have so many highlights from our time together. Naturally, we ticked off all the bucket list adventures – hiking to Angkerle Atwatye / Standley Chasm, spotting rock wallabies at Rungutjirpa / Simpsons Gap, plunging into Udepata / Ellary Creek, hot air ballooning over Tjoritja / the West MacDonnell Ranges, watching the sunset at Wurre / Rainbow Valley, and stargazing at Earth Sanctuary. But what really captured me was the side of you they don’t often write about in the magazines. Your incredible Indigenous art centres, showcasing stunning portraits of your landscapes; your quirky laneway cafés that rival those back in Sydney; your thriving festival scene with something for every taste; and your undeniable sense of pride and community that’s only found in small towns.
During my visit, I spoke with your family – people who have known you since birth and will always stand by your side. In case you didn’t already know, your community couldn’t love you more. They’ve seen you push through the tough times, believe in your full potential and are right there with you, advocating to reshape the reputation of both you and the entire town.
Alice, it was an honour to meet you and I can’t wait for our next adventure. While we can’t rewrite history, I admire how you won’t let it define you. Instead of living in the shadows of outdated stereotypes, you’re writing a new narrative – one that celebrates your rich multicultural heritage, thriving arts and culture scene, and the breathtaking beauty that surrounds you.
I hope one day everyone has the chance to befriend you and see you for who you truly are – the heart of Australia in its most authentic form.
Love from your new friend,
Melissa Woodley
