Spring is an exciting time to be in Austin. From SXSW festivities to a Bloody Mary festival—and, of course, the return of spring blooms, there’s no shortage of excitement. Fields across the city burst into color with Texas bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes and pink evening primroses. While bluebonnets line the highways, the best way to appreciate them is up close, so whether you’re after the Insta-worthy shot or just want time to soak in the scenery, these are the best places to see Texas wildflowers this spring.

  • Attractions
  • Slaughter Creek

Named after former first lady, Lady Bird Johnson, this wildflower center is home to nearly 900 native Texas plant species. It’s a prime spot to see Texas’ quintessential bluebonnets, pink-petaled primroses and Indian paintbrushes. While reservations aren’t required, they’re strongly encouraged—especially during peak blooming season—so be sure to secure your spot.

  • Things to do
  • Mckinney

Just 13 miles southeast of downtown, McKinney Falls State Park offers a beautiful Bluebonnet Meadow where you can get an up-close view of Texas’ state flower. While it may be tempting to walk through the blooms, remember to stick to the paved path to help preserve these delicate wildflowers.
