Fans of Odd Duck have been waiting for Sour Duck Market to open for ages, but as of this past weekend, the wait is over. The all day market and café announced their soft opening on their Facebook page, and while they sold out of goods on Sunday and had to close for the day, they're officially up and running for the remainder of the week.
The fast-casual eatery, located in Central East Austin, comes to us by way of the Odd Duck and Barley Swine crew—two popular Austin restaurants from chef Bryce Gilmore that have made their own substantial mark on the city. Unlike its sister restaurants, though, Sour Duck Market serves as a catch-all for daily dining: Pastry chef Erica Waksmunski churns out croissants and kolaches for a quick breakfast, or a pre-cursor to a more hefty morning meal like sourdough pancakes or a breakfast sandwich; an outdoor smokehouse, manned by Brian Cortes, is the birthplace of Sour Duck's meat department; a spacious patio is where diners can sit during lunch and enjoy burgers, sandwiches, soup and salads; and a back bar serves draft cocktails, beer and wine. In short, there's an option here no matter what you're in the mood for.
And how about that market part? Sour Duck will sell pantry staples like Barton Springs Mill’s flours, coffee, local honey and more, so that while you may not be able to replicate everything you order in the café, you'll certainly have the ingredients to give it a go.
While Sour Duck is currently operating at soft opening hours (7am until they're sold out), Eater reports that their hours will be Monday through Thursday 7am-10pm, Friday 7am-11pm, Saturday 9am-11pm and Sunday 9am-10pm. There's more to come on the menu, too, like additional sandwich options (we're excited for the goat chorizo).
In the meantime, take a look at this beautiful pastry wheel and start planning your visit:
