SXSW 2018 looms on the horizon, and before you start figuring out how you're going to be able to afford a badge (prices range from $445 to $1,450, and are set to go up soon), there's another option: Attending for free. Here's the deal.

Each year, SXSW puts a call out for thousands of volunteers to help run the festival from March 9 to 18, working with over 35 crews in areas that range from registration to technical support to gear transportation. In return, you'll receive a free SXSW badge. Sa-weet.

There are a couple of stipulations, of course. Volunteers must work for at least 24 hours in order to receive an EDU badge. If you can offer more time (48 to 63 hours), you're eligible to receive a Volunteer Interactive, Film or Music badge; those who work for more than 63 hours can get a Volunteer Platinum badge. All volunteers must be at least 16 to participate, though most music venue volunteers are required to be at least 21.

After registering here, you'll need to attend one of two volunteer sessions at the Austin Convention Center, where you'll find out your crew selection. Sessions take place on Sunday, January 21, 3-5pm and Saturday, January 27, 3-5pm.
