Austin is a whiskey town if ever there was one. So do we really need another bar dedicated to the brown stuff? If it comes from the team behind Half Step—yeah, we're OK with it.
Seven Grand, a groundbreaking whiskey bar from 213 Hospitality (which includes Half Step, as well as an impressive number of Los Angeles bars) first opened in L.A. in 2007, and is seen as the catalyst for downtown L.A.'s rapidly growing cocktail scene. With another branch in San Diego, the bar landed on Austin as its third locale, and has officially opened its doors on East 7th Street between Trinity and Neches.
Step inside the dimly lit, homey space and you'll find a taxidermy collection from Austin's Corner Shoppe, plaid carpeting, gorgeous bar tops made from native Texas wood and over 400 premium whiskeys (a collection that will eventually grow to over 700). The cornerstone of Seven Grand's cocktail menu includes the old-fashioned, mint julep, sazerac, rye manhattan and whiskey sour, but there will be other whiskey-based cocktails to choose from as well, along with wine and Texas beers. There's also, of course, a patio in the back, where you can swirl your drink at communal tables while listening to live music before heading back inside for a match at the billiard table.
In a press release, the Seven Grand team shared that "Texas and whiskey go hand in hand and live music is such an integral part of the Seven Grand concept. So locating here was an easy decision to make. After finding a historic brick building with a large patio, along with a great piece of native Texan Pecan for our bar top, everything else fell into place; we got to work on building a public house that both whiskey and bar lovers can call home in Austin.”
Seven Grand is open seven days a week from 5pm to close at 405 E 7th St.
