SXSW 2017 has been a festival mostly devoid of big-name surprises: No Kanye West pop-up at the power station (2011), no Kanye West guesting with Jay-Z (2014), no Kanye West anything...that's not to say there isn't still time, but the absence of spotlight-hogging celebrity moments is a good thing. Up-and-coming acts, like Chicago rapper Saba and Oakland indie-rock act Jay Som, have been rewarding fest-goers with top-notch sets all over town (9 in 4 days for the latter), while the stars that have played smaller than normal venues—At the Drive-In, Lil Wayne, Solange—have drawn deserving crowds without overshadowing the rest.
Then again, it would seem wrong if there wasn't some unexpected appearance to send folks scrambling to get in line.
This year, it looks like that'll be Lana Del Rey, who announced that her first performance of 2017 would be happening Friday, March 17, 8pm, at the festival's Apple Music space on 612 W 4th St in Austin.
This will be her first show since releasing new single "Love," in February. While she hasn't announced any other shows, we have to imagine she's a candidate to appear at some of the still-announced summer festival, like Lollapalooza. And Kanye, there's still time.
Hey y'all, we're coming to Texas!
