Just in time for this sweltering afternoon, Hamilton Pool Preserve has reopened for the summer, allowing swimmers back into its cool waters starting today, May 1, until September 30.

Hamilton Pool has experienced some trouble recently; last year, two swimmers drowned in the pool, prompting officials to close the area and beef up security measures. That's translated into a loaner life jacket program, in which visitors can stop by a kiosk and borrow life jackets in a number of sizes for free. They've also installed throw rings around the pool for any swimmers in need of assistance; here's hoping no one will have to use them.

If you haven't been to Hamilton Pool yet, here's a little primer: You'll need to make a reservation, which includes a $10, non-refundable vehicle fee in addition to a $15 entrance fee. You can pay the vehicle fee online with a credit card (note that this requires a $1 service fee), but the entrance fee is cash or check only. Reservations can be made for one of two time slots—9am-1pm and 2-6pm. Unfortunately, you can't bring your pets (or your drones, for that matter—who knew!), but bring hiking shoes to get to the pool, and plenty of snacks.
