Mezcal can be an acquired taste for many drinkers—the smokey liquor can seem overpowering for some, whether it comes straight in a copita or blended in a cocktail. But that's just the type of stigma that Las Perlas, a new mezcaleria from the team behind Seven Grand, is trying to fix.
Located right next to its whiskey sibling, Las Perlas has a curated selection of over 400 agave spirits, many of which you can order to simply sip, while others come in a robust list of cocktails that include an Oaxacan negroni, a Mexican Mule and the Spiced Daisy, a margarita incorporating spiced jalapenos. During a preview the other evening, my favorite drink on the menu was the Poblano Escobar (and not just for the cheeky name). The drink is a fiery blend of poblano peppers, cumin and vida mezcal, cut with sweetness from some pineapple. They also have an excellent paloma on tap, if you're looking for something light and refreshing.
Though Las Perlas shares a back patio with Seven Grand, its interior is decidedly different, with a backlit bar that glows green and 400 rabbits painted throughout the space, which pays homage to the Oaxacan goddess Mayahuel and her children Centzon Totochtin (who are considered responsible for protecting the agave plant). While Las Perlas won't be serving food, they will have a food truck out back that will be shared with Seven Grand.
The mezcaleria is currently in soft opening, but this Thursday it will join Seven Grand in a grand opening party. Stop by at 5pm and you'll find a spirits emporium with 15 brands and 60 bottles that you can sample for $30 (the first 100 guests will take home a commemorative spirits glass!). There will also be a whole hog roast starting at 7pm, plus drink specials and live music from 9pm until close.
Las Perlas is located at 403 E 7th Street.
